YouTube shooter practised

SAN BRUNO: Suspected YouTube shooter Nasim Aghdam practised at a gun range on Wednesday morning before she went to the company’s San Bruno campus and wounded three people before shooting and killing herself in what investigators say was a violent revolt against the company’s content policies, authorities say.

San Bruno police chief Ed Barberini yesterday affirmed Aghdam’s motive stemmed from her ire towards YouTube, which she accused of censoring the myriad video content she was uploading.

‘‘She was upset with policies and practices at YouTube,’’ he said.

Barberini said the 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun used in the attack was legally purchased and registered to Aghdam (39), and she apparently sharpenedup her shooting skills beforehand.

‘‘[Aghdam] went to a local gun range yesterday morning prior to visiting YouTube,’’ the chief said.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital yesterday said two victims hade been released: a 32yearold woman admitted in serious condition, and a 27yearold woman admitted in fair condition.

A 36yearold man remained in hospital in serious condition, the hospital said.

The FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also involved in the investigation, and yesterday morning authorities said the agencies executed search warrants at Aghdam’s family home in Menifee, in southern Riverside County.

In interviews, Aghdam’s family asserted they warned police about her potential for violence, particularly against YouTube, after she was contacted in Mountain View after the family reporting her missing over the weekend.

They told reporters they were not aware she had a gun, and surmised it must have been recent purchase.

‘‘We called the cop again and told him there is a reason she went all the way from San Diego to there so she might do something. I didn’t know she has a gun. I thought she might go there and start a fight or something and then the cop told me he would keep an eye on her,’’ said Shahran Aghdam, Aghdam’s brother.

‘‘And after 12 hours the shooting happened, so they didn’t do anything and she got killed and three or four more people got hurt. I did the best I can to avoid it but the cop didn’t do their job.’’

San Bruno investigators pulled up their stakes at the YouTube campus early yesterday after completing evidencegathering in the case.

The chief added Aghdam’s car had been impounded and was being examined, but investigators had not recovered any letter or manifesto from Aghdam. — The Mercury News/TCA
