Three teams remain unbeaten

OAMARU: Three teams remain unbeaten after the second round of Citizens Shield rugby played over an extended period during the Easter period.

Old Boys won by default over Athletic Marist, Kurow accounted for Valley 4727 and on Wednesday night Maheno defeated Excelsior 5110.

Excelsior held the green and black XV to 2010 at halftime but playing under the new lights at the Maheno Domain, the home side coasted home 5110.

Hardworking lock Brenton Scott set Maheno on the way with a brace of tries in the fifth and ninth minutes of the first half.

Excelsior fullback Matthew Slater kicked a penalty at the halfway mark of the first half.

Excelsior drew level with a try to loosehead prop Uhila Malifu and Slater’s penalty tied it up at 1010.

The boot of Tatapu added a penalty 10 minutes from halftime to take back the lead and five minutes later Maheno first fiveeighth Robbie Smith scored for Tatapu to convert and give the home side a 2010 halftime lead.

In the second half, points came from tries to Maheno fullback Craig Smith, flanker Marc Balchin and centre Lachie Kingan with the boot of Tatapu — who also scored two tries — adding the extra points.

This weekend, the game of the third round will be the clash between unbeaten sides Old Boys and Kurow at Whitestone stadium at 3pm.

On the number two ground Excelsior will play Athletic Marist at 3pm, while at Weston, Valley will host Maheno.

The clash between the country sides at Maheno will be interesting as will how the home team backs up for its second game in four days.

The competition is only in its early stages so it is hard to pick which is the side to beat.

Old Boys will be tough as usual but Kurow is considerably stronger than in previous years and could be hard to knock over.
