More medals at the velodrome

NEW Zealand track cyclists were back in the medals last night.

Track cyclist Dylan Kennett won bronze in the men’s individual pursuit to claim New Zealand’s fourth medal of the Gold Coast Commonweal­th Games.

Kennett dominated the race to beat Australia’s Jordan Kerby by more than four seconds at the velodrome in Brisbane.

Track cyclist Natasha Hansen claimed her second medal of the Games, a silver in the women’s sprint final against Australia’s Stephanie Morton .

Hansen had had a hardfought semifinal win over Canada’s Lauriane Genest.

She comfortabl­y won the first race of the semifinal but lost the second, before winning the third in a photo finish, with both riders crossing the line at almost exactly the same time.

All New Zealand’s medals so far have come on the cycling track following Thursday night’s gold to the men’s team sprint and silvers to the women’s team sprint and women’s team pursuit.

There could be more to come after men’s team sprint champions Eddie Dawkins and Sam Webster lined up in the keirin semifinals late last night, with Webster the silver medallist in the event four years ago.— AAP

GOLD COAST: Kiwi heavyweigh­t boxing medal prospect David Nyika says his opening defeat of Antigua and Barbuda’s Yakita Aska in the Commonweal­th Games was more tooth and nail than it looked.

All five judges comfortabl­y gave the fight to Nyika after three rounds at Oxenford Studios yesterday but the 22yearold was not seeing it that way.

Nyika said Aska made things difficult.
