Prominent Chinese owner to stand horse at Waimate

- JONNY TURNER

WAIMATE’S Willow Glen Stud is taking its association with a Chinese billionaire known as Mr Wolf to a new level.

Lin Lang, known as Mr Wolf because of his love of pet wolves, will stand his former smart racehorse Mongolian Falcon at Mike and Barbara Cooney’s equine breeding property next season.

The deal to stand the son of Fastnet Rock comes after Willow Glen had built up a strong relationship with the leviathan owner.

‘‘He’s been here quite a few times and we’ve sold horses out of the paddock to Mr Wolf for a number of years,’’ Barbara Cooney said.

‘‘We’ve enjoyed a good association and at his invitation we went to Inner Mongolia in the north of China the season before last. We went to their threeday racemeeting and loved every minute.’’

Trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs, Mongolian Falcon won three of his nine starts including the group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas. He was retired because of a knee injury after running sixth in the 2016 NZ 2000 Guineas.

The Fastnet Rock stallion is from the Galileo mare Amazing Beauty, whose dam is by Gone West.

‘‘He’s such a lovely horse and he is bred on the Fastnet RockGalileo cross which has produced an incredible 27% stakes winners to runners.’’
