Portsmouth Dr petrol station taking shape
CONSTRUCTION is continuing on a large selfservice petrol station in Portsmouth Dr which will boost the Dunedin profile of cheaperprice fuel supply firm the McKeown Group.
McKeown, an independent fuel company founded in Oamaru in 1966, operates sites between Kaikoura and Bluff.
McKeown Group managing director Ken McKeown, of Oamaru, said the Portsmouth Dr CardFuel 24/7 station would have six traffic lanes, three service islands and 12 pumps, the same size as its Wanaka station.
The foreshore station was likely to open late next month
A smaller, existing petrol station at Sawyers Bay was being revamped and would reopen before the Portsmouth Dr facility.
Fuel prices were still rising, the McKeown Group was expanding and the opening of two petrol stations in Dunedin was ‘‘very timely’’ and positive for both customers and the firm, Mr McKeown said.
‘‘We’re a distributor. We’re probably a little bit more competitive [than the others],’’ he said.
‘‘It’s our first site right in town’’, and diesel would also be available.
Three of four underground tanks had already been installed at Portsmouth Dr, he said.
The group also had a specialised marine diesel supply operation at Careys Bay, and already supplied two Caltex stations in the city.
