Roslyn Wakari wins thriller with 10shot shootout

- JONNY TURNER

ROSLYN Wakari won a thrilling Chatham Cup match against Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park in Dunedin yesterday.

It took 120 minutes of play and 10 penalty shots to eventually declare Roslyn Wakari the winner and the team to advance to the third round of the national competition.

Keeper Tom Stevens emerged as a hero when deflecting Dunedin Tech’s final shot in the match’s penalty shootout to send his teammates and their supporters in to raptures.

The 43 shootout result finally split the two teams who were tied 22 at the end of two halves of overtime and 11 at the end of regular time.

Roslyn Wakari took an early advantage in the second half of extra time after the two teams played out a goalless first stanza.

Nick Treadwell slotted a header from a long range pass to put his team ahead within seconds of the teams returning to the pitch.

Technical had more than 13 minutes to level scores getting their best chance when Elliot Jenkins hit the turf heavily.

Tim McLennan could not slot the resulting penalty shot which was deflected by Tom Stevens, but on a second swipe the Tech player got the ball past the keeper to again level the scores.

After two more goalless minutes of overtime the match went to penalty shootout. The thrilling finish to the game was in contrast to much of regular time.

The first half and the early part of the second half had static, defensive football with few legitimate shots on goal. Tech held a 10 advantage after Tim McLennan and Rhys Quarrell combined to score with some slick attacking play.

The goal came after some of the Roslyn Wakari players turned their focus to appealing to the referee for a possible penalty.

A 10 Tech win looked likely until a Roslyn equalised through a brilliant effort from Tennessee Kinghorn late in the second half of regular time.

Roslyn’s penalty shootout win means it progresses to the next round of the Chatham Cup in three weeks.

Fellow Dunedin side Green Island also needed extra time to progress further in the national competition.

It beat Queenstown 10 after the teams were deadlocked at 00 at the end of regular time.

Mosgiel will also progress to the Chatham Cup’s third round after it beat Northern at Forrester Park in Dunedin.

Grants Braes beat Old Boys 30 in Invercargill yesterday and it, too, progresses in the competition.

Meanwhile, Dunedin Technical did not let Roslyn Wakari edge it out in yesterday’s round two matches of the Kate Sheppard Cup.

A lone Shontelle Smithgoal enabled Dunedin Tech to win 10 at Ellis Park in Dunedin yesterday.

A double from Otago University’s BritneyLee Nicholson helped her side beat Queenstown 32 at Logan Park in Dunedin yesterday.

Jamiee Paterson also landed a goal to help the winner progress to round three of the Kate Sheppard Cup in three weeks.

Amy Hislop scored two goals for Queenstown in their defeat.

LONDON: England has extra motivation at this year’s World Cup as it looks to eradicate the ‘‘nasty feeling’’ of a dismal exit from the 2016 European Championships in France, striker Marcus Rashford has said.

England endured an underwhelming campaign at its most recent major tournament, falling 21 to surprise package Iceland in the round of 16 and Manchester United forward Rashford said the team was eager to redeem itself in Russia.

‘‘The feeling of losing is a nasty feeling,’’ Rashford said before the June 14July 15 tournament.

‘‘When you speak about [it], people don’t understand. So definitely we’ll take all the things that happened at that tournament into the next one because that is one of the important things to spur us.

‘‘The main thing is to go into a tournament with con fidence in our selves. The easiest way to get that is through performances but we know each individual is working hard in training so we are going to be confident.’’

Rashford come on as a secondhalf substitute in England’s 21 friendly victory over Nigeria on Sunday. Manager Gareth Southgate’s side is set to conclude its World Cup preparations with a friendly against Costa Rica on Friday.

England kicks off its World Cup campaign against Tunisia on June 18. Panama and Belgium are the other teams in group G.

A Brazil midfielder Fred has insisted his focus remains firmly on the World Cup amid rumours of an impending £52 million ($NZ99 million) move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester United.

The 25yearold, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, came on as a secondhalf substitute in yesterday’s 20 friendly win over Croatia at Anfield.

‘‘I’ll still talk to my agents to find out the reality of it,’’ Fred told Brazilian newspaper Globo.

‘‘I want to focus only on the team. It’s a unique time, the World Cup. We have to try to forget things from outside.’’

Reports in Brazil indicated a deal to become United’s first signing of the summer is so close the player is due to use his time in the northwest to head to Old Trafford for a medical.

But Fred was evasive when questioned about his exact itinerary, insisting: ‘‘I’m going to talk to the people and meet my friends. I still do not know where I’m going’’.

Brazil coach Tite urged the player to resolve his future as soon as possible in order to retain focus on the finals in Russia.
