Degree restructuring for PE school

- ALEX MCLEOD

AS the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education celebrates 70 years, it has announced major changes to its degree structure.

The fouryear bachelor of physical education and bachelor of applied science in sport technology degrees are being replaced by four threeyear majors in the bachelor of science, bachelor of applied science, and bachelor of arts degrees.

The changes come as the school tries to maintain its number one ranking in sportsrelated subjects in New Zealand, and its placing of 12th in the QS World University Rankings.

Associate Prof Chris Button said it had been about two decades since the last curriculum restructuring took place, meaning change was necessary in order to fight off competition from emerging universities.

‘‘We’re looking to try and better align the curriculum with careers, to make it a bit more careerfocused,’’ he said.

‘‘Initially, we set out to train PE teachers, but over time, the qualification has become much more than just about PE.

‘‘It’s become about physical activity, health, sport development and management.

‘‘That’s why we’ve gone for multiple degrees now, to make sure it’s obvious to students, if they take a particular major or minor combination, what that’s preparing them for.’’

The restructuring announcement coincides with the school’s 70th anniversary celebrations, which is encapsulated by a twoweek display at Hocken Collections called Movement Through Time.

It exhibits memorabilia from the past 70 years, including film images, digital images and short videos, and was created by fourthyear physical education student, Sinead Ford.

Assoc Prof Button said the school’s longevity reflected its quality, and he expected it to flourish in the coming years.

‘‘I’m convinced, as long as we have good staff and good students, that the school is going to be in good shape in the future.’’
