Edendale reaches semifinals in div one

- LOGAN SAVORY

SOUTHLAND’S division one club rugby semifinalists have been sorted.

Despite one round still to be played in the competition, all four semifinal spots have been locked in after the Edendale backline again cut loose on Saturday in a bonus point victory.

Wyndham, Waikaka, and Midlands had already been confirmed as semifinalists, with Edendale and Riversdale scrapping it out for the fourth spot.

Edendale blitzed Mossburn 5317, running in nine tries in total.

Veteran lock Karl Laurence was outstanding and the backline provided yet another glimpse as to where its threat might be, come semifinal time.

Bailey Wallace and Bram Fodie were dangerous and veteran coach Mike Cunningham went as far as describing the backline as one of the best he has coached.

While Edendale registered a bonuspoint win on Saturday, Riversdale could not register a point in its 2010 loss to topofthetable Wyndham, which ended Riversdale’s semifinal hopes.

Only the finishing order of the top four will be at stake this coming Saturday.

Te Anau, out of playoff contention, impressed with a 4124 win at home over Midlands.

Waikaka again highlighted its ability with a 550 victory over bottomplaced Waiau Star in the other division one game.

In division two section A, Pioneer took the bragging rights in the battle of the Gore clubs, beating AlbionExcelsior 2520.

Blues Bs remarkable 2018 season continued as it crushed Waikiwi 4819.

The third scheduled game was postponed after the Star Bs bus, on the way to Queenstown to play Wakatipu, turned around when news of poor weather in the resort town filtered through.

In section B, Tokanui ran rampant in its 530 win over PiratesOld Boys B team, and Riverton booked a 2110 victory over Drummond- Limehills-Star.

Marist B was forced to default its second game this season when it was unable to front against Woodlands.

Bluff shapes as a real title threat in division three after it banked a 2517 win over Mataura to cap off its club day on Saturday.

Otautau responded from its first loss of the season last week with a comfortable 320 victory over OhaiNightcaps.

In the third division three game, BalfourLumsden recorded a 6619 win over Collegiate.
