Lowcost bike repairs popular

ABOUT half a dozen bicycles were repaired and awareness was raised about doityourself bicycle repairs during an event at the University of Otago campus yesterday.

Information about other forms of sustainability, including composting, was also provided by Students for Environmental Action at the noon event, held outdoors near the University Union building.

The activities were part of the inaugural EnviroWeek on campus.

University third year BSc ecology and zoology student Yelah Mcdougall (21) was pleased to have some work done on her bike, getting her ‘‘back on the road’’.

‘‘It’s so helpful that they can do these workshops,’’ she said.

Volunteer bicycle repairer Alex Gorrie was pleased the twohour repair session had raised awareness of two Dunedin doityourself bicycle repair workshops: one at The Crooked Spoke, at 111 Moray Place, and the other at the Valley Community Workspace, in Allen St, Northeast Valley.

Providing lowcost repairs, and teaching cyclists how to tackle the work themselves through the doityourself repair centres, was helping to make cycling more affordable and sustainable, Mr Gorrie said.

Bicycle repair volunteer and Malcam Trust coordinator Guy Pringle said the repair session had ‘‘helped create awareness’’ of lowcost repair options.

Anotherdoityourself bicycle repair session will be run at the same spot, on the University Union lawn, between noon and 2pm today.
