Spectacular show hits 40

-

IT seems that after 40 years, Dunedin’s Autospectacular is only becoming more popular. The event that kicked off in 1978 in the Army Drill Hall, organised by a group of young enthusiasts under the banner Swaparama, has notched up four decades of polished crome and sculpted steel.

But this year, the Autospectacular, now at home in the Edgar Centre, has been inundated with entries like never before, organiser

Kevin Casey says.

For the first time the show had a waiting list of owners wanting to show their vehicles and some missed out.

‘‘We have always managed to fill the show, but have never had a waiting list before.’’

Vehicles are again coming from garages around the lower South Island, including a delegation from Bill Richardson Transport World, in Invercargill, which will transport some of its cars outside the southern city for the first time.

Today’s show, which is open from 9am4pm, features classics from almost every continent, including Jaguars, Holdens, Buicks, hot rods and rat rods, and a feature on hot Japanese cars.

Casey advises not to make the mistake of turning up late in the afternoon hoping to get around the show; if you want to see it all, you’ll need more time than that.

Admission is $10 adults, $2 children, under5s free; or $20 for a family of four.
