Man stranded in car; several arrests made

A MAN who was sleeping in his car as heavy snow hit Queenstown yesterday morning was left stranded.

Police were called by the man asking for his car to be towed from Skippers Rd yesterday morning after he had gone driving on Sunday night and stopped to sleep as it got dark.

When he woke up in his car, about five or six kilometres away from the turnoff to Skippers Canyon, the road was covered in about four inches of snow.

Officers were sent to check on the driver yesterday morning and help him remove his vehicle from the road.

Police also dealt with several incidents in Queenstown over the weekend.

A 21yearold Queenstown man was arrested on Sunday night after allegedly refusing to pay for food he was eating in the Night ’n Day store in Camp St.

Sergeant Chris Brooks, of Queenstown, said the man refu sed to give his details to police and he remained in custody yesterday and had been charged with failure to pay.

A 28yearold driver was stopped and breathtested by police in Fernhill Rd about 12.40am yesterday.

He blew a reading of 785mcg and is due to appear in court this week charged with drinkdriving.

A 31yearold man was arrested about 9am on Sunday at Queenstown Airport.

Sgt Brooks said the man had flown in from Auckland and was found to be in possession of two glass pipes, which tests showed had been used to smoke crystal meth.

He is due to appear in court this week charged with possessing instruments for the purpose of taking drugs.

An Australian tourist (29) was arrested about 1am on Sunday for allegedly urinating in the middle of a roundabout in Shotover St.

He was given a precharge warning.
