Queenstown District Court

-

A 19YEAROLD Queenstown woman with a history of dishonesty offences has narrowly avoided jail after she was caught in her neighbours’ kitchen.

Shayna Marie Hallet, unemployed, admitted the burglary of a Mountaineer St property on December 19 last year when she appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Tuesday.

It was her sixth dishonesty conviction and second for burglary.

Noting her history, Judge John Strettell told Hallet she was close to the point where the court ‘‘will have its hands tied and no option but to send you to prison’’.

A probation report said she had shown little remorse for her offending.

Counsel Louise Denton said there had been a ‘‘neighbours at war’’ situation between Hallet and the victims, who had since left the property and returned to the United Kingdom.

She was discovered standing in their kitchen with the fridge door open, ‘‘suggesting she was going to take some items’’.

Judge Strettell said the past few years of the defendant’s life had been a ‘‘difficult and criminally motivated period of time’’.

Hallet was convicted and sentenced to three months’ home detention and 120 hours’ community work.
