‘Near miss’ at Moana Pool

- GEORGE BLOCK

A DUNEDIN pool is closed for a week after a piece of the ventilation system fell on to a walkway, in what the manager called a ‘‘near miss’’.

Moana Pool’s leisure pool will be closed until Friday after a ventilation cover fell on to a poolside area on Thursday.

Pool manager Nicola Jukes said the leisure pool was closed while technicians inspected the other ventilation ducts on the roof above the area, which features a wave pool, a rapid river and a toddlers’ play area.

‘‘We wanted to check the rest . . . if one falls, there might be others.’’

While no swimmers were in the poolside area at the time, Ms Jukes conceded the incident could have been much more serious.

‘‘There was noone in the area at the time, but it is your classic nearmiss. We needed to take action to make sure it doesn’t cause injury.’’

While it was disappointing the popular leisure pool would be closed for Labour Weekend, the hydroslide, main and learners’ pools would remain open, Ms Jukes said.
