Home Science appeal
WE have been asked to publish the following appeal: — Otago is proud of its University, and has shown this by the contributions which it has made to its funds from time to time. In the past, the Medical School, which is so important a part of the University, has made the chief calls on the liberality of the public. Today its youngest daughter, of School of Home Science, desires to be heard and helped. The work of the Home Science School is of supreme importance to the whole community. This is being recognised more and
more fully every day. Tomorrow, it will be acknowledged by all. The school started work in 1911, with two students for the degree and three for the diploma. This year there are 60 students, and next year it seems probable that there will be at least 80. To meet the need of this growing department, the Government has made a grant of £5460 to erect laboratories, lecture rooms, etc, in which the teaching of science in its application to the various branches or household management can be adequately carried out. A further sum of £1626 is, however, needed to complete the building; but if the citizens of Dunedin will raise £813 the Government will give £1 subsidy for every £1 given as a free contribution.
