Dunedin District Court
TIME in custody before sentencing had been a chance for the man to reflect, public defender Sophia Thorburn said when a 20yearold appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday.
‘‘He knows he has a lot of growing up to do,’’ Ms Thorburn told Judge David Saunders. ‘‘He accepts he is going to prison today.’’
An eightmonth sentence of home detention imposed on Jadin Pepene HadfieldLeonard at the end of May had broken down. He had served about four months of the term, the court heard.
Resentenced on two burglaries on which he received the home detention, HadfieldLeonard was given eight months’ jail.
Bringing the total sentence to 11 months was a threemonth term on another matter — HadfieldLeonard having admitted possessing an offensive weapon (a knife) in circumstances showing an intention to commit an offence involving the threat of violence, between August 10 and 15.
That offence occurred while he was subject to the sentence of home detention, the judge noted.
HadfieldLeonard will be under six months’ release conditions from when his prison term ends.
