Future of our society rests on literacy

-

WE would like to applaud the committee who so impressively put together last weekend’s Ignition

Kids Book Festival.

It was a solid Dunedin achievement supported by Dunedin Public Libraries, the University

Book Shop, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Dunedin Unesco City of Literature.

So many children with happy faces. So many engaged and interested parents. Top writers imported from other parts of New Zealand, and recognition of our local writers especially Robyn Belton with her Inaugural Ignition Children’s Festival Award.

The future of our society rests on literacy, on being able to articulate and discuss what we think.

It’s increasingly crucial that we all encourage a love of books in young people.

No other method of reading engages and develops the brain to the same extent.

Thank you to all the sponsors. You understand.

Road works confusion

WHAT a Mickey Mouse outfit is going on between Moray Pl and St Andrew St.

The street should be called Confusion St, because that is what is happening.

If it wasn’t for the nice, helpful men who take me by the arm and escort me from the rear entrance of Farmers to the Countdown car park, I would be struggling to get the maze figured out.

I know the Dunedin City Council members are trying to improve the traffic problem on the main street, but think of the bus drivers trying to negotiate the tight corners.

I bet some hot air will flow out of the buses. Betty Ferguson
