Scaling a tree branch high above the Otago Museum Reserve yesterday is Waikouaiti arborist Dom Ritter, who was competing in the work climb section at the New Zealand Arboricultural Association’s Husqvarna National Tree Climbing Championship.

Mr Ritter said while he was confident in his climbing abilities he was a little bit nervous climbing in front of his friends and family.

‘‘You want to be the best in your industry and we have some real worldclass climbers here, so if you can keep up with those guys you’re doing pretty well.’’

Head judge Craig Webb said 25 men and five women were taking part in the competition across five disciplines.

Three of the five events — work climb, tree rescue and throw line — were held yesterday and the final two events would be held today, Mr Webb said.

‘‘It’s very competitive and at stake is a place representing New Zealand at the worlds and people train hard out for it and really want to peak for this competition.’’

A children’s climb and senior competition would also be held on the reserve today.

The event is being held in conjunction with the association’s national conference also being held in Dunedin.
