Election will give people say on highway issues

-

IT has always been very easy for local people to foresee the problems which would be created if State Highway 1 was reduced to a narrow causeway for traffic of all sizes.

Although some business people and ratepayers raised concerns before and during the changes, a few planners, and our councillors forged ahead with their ‘‘brilliant’’ idea. They are now endeavouring to convince us that all is well and everything is working as planned.

We know better. Dunedin now has a SH1 thoroughfare which is dangerous and unpopular for most people. In fact, we have pedestrians, motorists and cyclists avoiding this area and instead using George St. Traffic holdups are the norm and several concerned people are writing to the ODT, almost daily, regarding safety, lack of parking spaces, and access to businesses.

It is too late. It is now not worth any locals preparing submissions, or voicing opinions, as those responsible for making decisions have their own agendas and also closed minds.

Dunedin people need to be given an opportunity to vote on what are the very best transport and other decisions for our city.

However, we must now wait for the local body elections, and trust that not too many unsuitable people stand for mayor and/or council.

Dunedin needs leaders who listen to the people and who are experienced in business, trades and finance — leaders who can make the best decisions for the best little city in the world. Bernice Armstrong

Boxing

I REPEAT: the University of Otago did away with boxing blues many years ago. Boxing abolition in the general community should be widely endorsed. (Stupidly, I was in a boxing ring many years ago. The revered Alf Goodman was my coach).
