Abigail Barnes (Auckland)
I transferred to Otago for my final year of design because of the polytech’s emphasis on sustainable practice.
Fashion design that is governed by its effects on the environment is something I am passionate about.
My time as a fashion student has led me to hold strong values around sustainability within the industry and a belief that many of the current systems need to change.
Something by Someone uses many different sustainable methods and materials.
Locally grown wool, Australian hemp, secondhand fabrics, digital printing and natural plantbased dyeing come together to demonstrate some of the many exciting possibilities and alternatives of sustainable fashion design.
I want Something by Someone to be used as a starting platform for other designers and students to learn from when it comes to sustainable design. I believe that people want to design sustainably, but a lot of the time they are uneducated about how to do it.
I created this project with the intention to share it with other students and designers so they can implement more sustainable practices into their designs.
The collection is inspired by my love for colourful sunsets which, funnily enough, are more stunning when there is less pollution in the air.
