Petition the council to treasure Wanaka pathway

-

IN Wanaka, we treasure our art and support creativity in many ways. We are about to host the 30th Wanaka Autumn Art School, we frequently showcase local and national artists, we provide various grants to support up and coming artists, and we have several art installations around our lakeside town.

However, we have one very accessible and frequently viewed art installation that our local council wishes to move, and in doing so will destroy the creativity and intention of the locals who worked collaboratively to install the Millennium Path alongside Ardmore St on the lakefront.

The Millennium Path was created to celebrate the last 2000 years and was intended to be there for many decades to come. Instead, it faces destruction after less than two decades.

There is now a petition available in several Wanaka businesses for people who would like to sign, urging the QLDC to respect this treasured art installation so it remains an important part of our local Upper Clutha history. Let’s restore it, and leave it where was intended to be. Jenny Moss

In my estimation

THANK you for correcting the Prime Minister’s use of ‘‘underestimate’’ (to ‘‘overstate’’) in the report of her conversation with Prince William (ODT, 25.1.19).

I’m pleased that you have not underestimated the confusion caused by the misuse of ‘‘underestimate’’ and ‘‘overestimate’’, particularly when there is a negative nearby.

We should never overestimate our language skills when we use these terms.

If journalists and speakers could ignore under and overestimating and use clearer and simpler terms, they would rise greatly in my estimation. Pat Roddick
