Green Island unable to slow down Mosgiel’s winning charge

- NEVILLE WATSON

MOSGIEL kept up its perfect record on Saturday with a 42 win over Green Island at Mosgiel.

Green Island took the lead when a welldelivered corner was met firmly by Lewis Wall, whose header gave Levi Waddington no chance.

Mosgiel replied three minutes later when Cam Anderson rode through two challenges, referee Calvin Berg allowed the advantage and his cross found Charlie Gruppelaar, who scored at the back post.

Riley Anderton, with a simple tap in, gave Mosgiel the lead and it was 31 after 35 minutes when Morgan Day’s firsttime shot from 30m found the goal.

Green Island substitute Ryan Fleming scored a minute after coming on 10 minutes into the spell.

A loose Green Island ball proved the pivotal moment when Cam Anderson pounced and gave Mosgiel a twogoal advantage and that is how it stayed.

An early injury to Thomas Rewi gave Tom Mills an opportunity and he played a pivotal role in Queenstown’s 30 win over Northern.

Jan Kumar received the ball 25m out and with a drop of his shoulder bent a delightful finish into the bottom corner.

Carlos Hermann skipped past the Northern defence and calmly scored to make it 20. Kumar added a classy third just before halftime.

Northern showed more resilience in the second half with youngster Ben Lund, on debut, impressing coach Liuz Uehara.

Roslyn Wakari claimed a tight 21 win over Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park.

Roslyn took the lead in the second half through Reid Hulleman finding space on the left, driving towards the box and burying the ball in the bottomright corner. It went further ahead when substitute Tom Bealin latched on to a ball from Ollie Colloty and finished calmly.

Rhys Quarrell was brought down but George McCall’s penalty hit the crossbar.

Michael Neverson stepped up and converted a second penalty with 10 minutes to go. Technical continued to press for an equaliser, coming close only for Roslyn goalkeeper Tom Stevens to make a smart foot save.

At the Caledonian Ground, Otago University beat Wanaka 40 thanks to a good secondhalf performance.

The match was scoreless at the break but University’s patient possession game paid dividends when Ben Stanley ran directly through the heart of the Wanaka defence and calmly beat Britton Dowling in goal to score on 57 minutes

Varsity doubled the lead when a shot was well parried by Dowling but the rebound was pounced on by skipper Dom Scahill.

The third came when Tom Durkin unleashed a 30m drive and Scahill scored his second with five minutes left.

Caversham secured its second win of the season following a dominant second half in which it scored three unanswered goals at Tonga Park.

Campbell Thompson put the home team in front on 13 minutes but David Mwangi equalised 13 minutes later.

Referee Dan Woulahan issued three firsthalf yellow cards to Southland.

Caversham skipper Andy Ridden settled their nerves just before halftime when slotting home. Speedster Ben Kiore bagged a brace with goals in the 54th and 62nd minutes before Thompson got his second to complete the scoring.
