Tyler training partnership out to continue good start

- STAFF REPORTER

RIVERTON horsewoman Aimee Tyler is loving her first season training in partnership with her father, Kelvin.

The trainers will attempt to continue the good start they have made their joint venture at tomorrow’s Wairio Cup meeting at Ascot Park.

Training horses had been a longterm goal for Aimee (24), who gave her father inspiration to take out his training licence more than a decade ago.

‘‘He used to ride back in his younger days and his family was involved in racing,’’ she said.

‘‘He went off it a bit and was more focused on dairy farming, but he always owned a couple [of horses] and I convinced him that he should train his own.’’

Kelvin has built his stable from humble beginnings to become one of the leading trainers in Otago and Southland.

‘‘He started off training just a couple of horses from home and I would help him and as he got bigger I just followed him,’’ Aimee said.

‘‘I was always keen to get into training myself and it was talked about for a wee while but with me being so young . . . We decided to hold off for a bit while I built up my knowledge and then I got my licence earlier this season.’’

The father and daughter combination have notched 23 wins together since joining forces earlier this season.

The Tylers, who have 2530 horses in work, will start 15 horses at tomorrow’s meeting.

Timy Tyler, Lil Miss Swiss, and Tilly Dunnage will start in the feature race, the 2155m Wairio Cup.

‘‘They’re complete opposites to each other, but all three of them always try their hearts out and they’re never too far away in the finish,’’ Aimee said.

Lil Miss Swiss comes in to the race after failing at Riccarton, behind Dee And Gee.

The Riverton Cup winner could be competitive tomorrow if she is ridden more patiently.

‘‘She wasn’t ridden to instructions at Riccarton last start and she’s not one that can come through the field,’’ Aimee said.

‘‘She’s a little wee girl and generally she does a lot better scooping the field.’’

The Ascot Park track has been rated heavy late this week.

Any rain in the region would be welcomed for Tilly Dunnage, who relishes heavy going.

‘‘She’s also really well at the moment and the wetter the better for her, she loves it.

‘‘If the rain does come she would be my pick of the bunch.’’

Timy Tyler comes in to the Wario Cup after notching his ninth win in his 100th start on his home track.

The evergreen 8yrold will benefit from BB Hong’s 3kg claim, which brings his weight down to 57kgs.

Ascot Park galloper Finbarr will attempt to bounce back from a shock defeat in tomorrow’s Wairio Plate.

The Gai Robinsontrained galloper disappointed when 10th behind Dynamic in his last start at Riverton.

Finbarr should get an excellent chance to bounce back to form in tomorrow’s 1400m race.

The horse would relish heavy going if the track remains in that condition and he would also be suited to stepping up to 1400m.
