Win keeps Mossburn in touch

- JOHN LANGFORD

IN the sixth round of the division one competition Mossburn earned a vital win, 1813 at home over Waikiwi, to stay in touch with the top four.

Mossburn coach Todd Cavanagh said it was a hard fought match that could have gone either way.

‘‘Waikiwi’s forwards worked very hard but our defence was solid all day, led by lock forward Gareth Coutts.’’

Coutts was named man of the match, while Mossburn’s midfielders Josh Cavanagh and Cal Clark were standouts in a dominant backline. Mossburn now sits fifth on the points table behind Pioneer, Blues B, Waikiwi and Albion Excelsior.

Blues B beat Wakatipu 4319 in Queenstown, Albion beat Star B 3912 in Gore, and across town, Pioneer demolished Waiau Star 730.

In division two, Drummond Limehills Star Club celebrated its 25th anniversary with a clinical 5712 win over Woodlands B in Drummond. Harry Smith at No 8 was player of the day.

Referee Andrew Roland and the perfect surface at Drummond helped provide a good spectacle.

Crisp passing from the halves pairing of Kyle Sinclair and Jimmy Johnstone, and hard and direct running from midfielder Nathan Milne were other highlights.

Riverton dominated the experienced Blues B2s at Balmoral Drive to win 377. Outstanding performances from Pete Templeton, Dave Roberts and Jacob Brown helped set the platform.

There were three close games in division two. Bush Pirates beat Balfour Lumsden 3229, Bluff beat Ohai Nightcaps 3523 and Pirates Old Boys B team beat Marist’s B team 2922.

Collegiate’s difficult season continued when it defaulted to Mataura.
