Cold conditions do not stop school sports tournament

A GOOD oldfashioned wintry blast in Maniototo did not halt day two action for high school pupils at the Southern Area Schools Tournament in Ranfurly yesterday.

About 180 pupils from six area schools from Otago, Southland and the Mackenzie District have assembled in Maniototo this week for an event which spans 18 sporting codes.

Years 7 to 13 pupils from The Catlins, Lawrence, Maniototo, Roxburgh, Twizel and Waiau schools have been flying their respective colours.

Yesterday, the temperature in Ranfurly struggled its way to 4.5degC as the hockey, netball and rugby events got under way.

Netball matchups were moved indoors due to the inclement conditions.

The challenge of housing half a dozen schools in a small community has been met with strong support from residents.

Tournament director Sam Stevens paid tribute to the Maniototo community and accommodation providers who welcomed pupils and families.

‘‘It really is a community effort. We’ve got 180 kids to billet plus the teachers. So that’s well over 200 beds for two nights.’’

The Wedderburn Cottages and Naseby Holiday Park had also offered cheaper accommodation for the event.

‘‘The local PTA is running food for all the staff, teachers and helpers,’’ said Mr Stevens.

Roxburgh Area School pupils enjoyed a solid day’s work as they clinched both the netball and rugby events. Maniototo Area School won the hockey.

The tournament concludes today with volleyball, table tennis, petanque, ki o rahi and golf. Pupils will also be considered for selection for South of the South teams which will travel to Rotorua for the National Sports Tournament in July.
