Jewels spur for Delightful Deal

- JONNY TURNER

STANDOUT laststart Forbury Park winner Delightful Deal will attempt to seal a Harness Jewels start when she races at Gore tomorrow.

The Nathan Williamsontrained pacer made it two wins from two starts this campaign when she produced a scintillating finish to win at the Dunedin track last week.

Williamson waited patiently at the back of the field before unleashing his 4yrold for her run 300m from home.

It may have looked like the trainerdriver had left his run too late, but Delightful Deal quickly quashed that theory by winning by a length and ahalf.

‘‘It was quite temporelated. I sort of felt those [horses] up front had done enough,’’ Williamson said.

‘‘I know that she has got a finish on her and so it proved.

‘‘We were rapt with the result and she got valuable money for the Jewels.’’

Delightful Deal will face vastly different circumstances when she attempts to move into a top12 qualifying spot in 4yrold mares division of the Harness Jewels.

The Bettor’s Delight mare will race over 2700m for the first time and has to negotiate her first standing start.

And she will do so against the kind of racehardened opposition she has never faced before.

‘‘There are a lot of firsts for her there.

‘‘She seems to be quick into her gear here at home and she is a nicegaited type of mare, so we are hopeful that she will begin [well].

‘‘We are are going in there a wee bit blind, but she needs to race to force her way into the Jewels and hopefully she can do that.’’

Her main and more experienced rivals include Robyns Playboy, Santanna’s Rocket and Born To Boogie.

Williamson has a strong book of drives that includes Full Noise in race 6 and Tulsa Jaccka in race 9.

Tulsa Jaccka looked to have the rating 5260 fillies and mares’ 2200m mobile at her mercy until she landed barrier 1 on the second row.

Williamson hoped he could work the Wayne Adamstrained filly into the clear after the start.

‘‘It can be a wee bit tricky from there.

‘‘It is not an overly big field, so hopefully she can work her way out in to some clear at some stage,’’ he said.

Tulsa Jaccka’s good laststart second behind the talented Chuckles suggested she is ready to strike next up.

‘‘She has done a wee bit of work and finished it off good, and she can sprint if saved up.’’

Full Noise holds 12th place on the 3yrold trotters section of the Harness Jewels leaderboard.

The Brett Graytrained trotter gets the perfect opportunity to solidify his chances of qualifying for the signature event in a rating 4090 race over 2700m.

The Majestic Son 3yrold is set to start a short favourite and will be seeking a hattrick of wins.
