Hans Eikaas (47), environmen­tal scientist, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 1349mcg (routine traffic stop, stated had consumed five glasses of wine and some beer), State Highway 1, Milton, about 10pm, June 16, fined $2000, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed 28 days (alcoholint­erlock and zeroalcoho­l licence provisions to follow). Judge accepted Eikaas had no alcohol issues, had not expected to be driving; noted he had no previous conviction­s.

Jackson Wright Cook (24), of Kaitangata, drinkdrivi­ng, 899mcg (police pulled him over, said he had two beers; judge said “it must have been more than two beers”), December 21. Salcombe St, fined $850, court costs $130, 28day disqualifi­cation, alcoholint­erlock licence to follow.

Padraig McKeown (24), employed, of Balclutha, drinkdrivi­ng, 711mcg (police noticed vehicle headlamp not working), Clyde St, Balclutha, about 12.20am, December 21, fined $800, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (from January 17 at end of 28day suspension imposed on the night). Judge noted McKeown not previously before the court.

Etuale Tanupo Sue (36), freezing worker, of Balclutha, drinkdrivi­ng, 600mcg (Sue had been drinking in Hotel South Otago, drove away, traffic complaint made to police, found sitting in the driver's seat outside his home, said he had three bottles of beer), 3am, December 22, Renfrew St, fined $600, court costs $130, six months' disqualifi­cation.

Scott Parihi Dewes (41), painter, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 517mcg, Ida ValleyOmak­au Rd, Poolburn (spoken to after speed checked at 113kmh in 100kmh zone; stated had a big night the previous night watching the rugby), about 12.30pm, September 9, three months' community detention (curfewed 7pm7am Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), nine months' supervisio­n, disqualifi­ed one year and one day. Judge noted Dewes had four previous drinkdrive conviction­s, most recent in 2011 when last before the court on any matter.

Bodine Philip Mitchell (20), presser, of Kaitangata, drinkdrivi­ng, 471mcg (pulled over by police, appeared affected by alcohol; duty lawyer Max Winders said the defendant had something to eat and only thought he was risking a ticket, previously convicted in 2017), 8.28pm, December 23, Clyde St, Balclutha, 80 hours' community work, court costs $130, eight months' disqualifi­cation.

Adam John Wayman (32), mine worker, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 451mcg (in explanatio­n stated had energy drink and vodkas during the night, believed he was all right to drive), Kenmure Rd, about 5.15am, November 3, fined $500, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months.

Joshua Taine Kelton Wright (20), beneficiar­y, of Alma, Oamaru, drinkdrivi­ng, 82mg, and careless driving (negotiatin­g Andersons Bay RdPortobel­lo Rd roundabout, lost control due to speed, crashed into lamp post on footpath outside BP petrol station, lamp post extensivel­y damaged, ripped out of ground; Wright stated became upset after drinking with friends, just wanted to leave the party, was driving too fast), about 2.15am, November 13, fined $500, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months, reparation $924.60. Counsel Deborah Henderson said Wright’s car was written off; he had no previous conviction­s.

Daniel Mark Chettlebur­gh (38), of Dunedin, presenting an imitation firearm, dangerous driving (defendant was visiting a family member, fight broke out between one of his relatives and a neighbour, Chettlebur­gh pulled BB gun from his car and yelled at everyone to stop fighting, he was confronted by the male and female neighbours, she stood in front of his car, drove towards her while man was trying to open the door, left at speed), September 21, 80 hours' community work, court costs $130, seven months' disqualifi­cation.

Garry Stephen Harvey (31), of Dunedin, assault using bottle as weapon, and Crimes Act assault on the victim, about 12.20pm, October 16, 2018 (victim 26yearold male not known to Harvey, incident occurred when Harvey arrived at victim's house to help an associate move some belongings out of the address; charges found proved at trial before Judge Smith last August; judge noted Harvey maintained he was trying to defend himself, told him ‘‘you and I have a difference of opinion about that''), three months' community detention (curfewed 7pm7am daily), 200 hours' community work, $1000 emotional harm reparation, court costs $130.

Male (42), employed, of Dunedin, Crimes Act male assaults female offence against woman with whom in relationsh­ip, and speaking threatenin­gly to her (victim received sore right arm and shoulder, sore right shin and foot, sore buttocks, soreness to left side of head; did not seek medical attention), about 7pm, July 9, 80 hours' community work, nine months' supervisio­n. Public defender Andrew Dawson said defendant felt awful about the offending, selfreferr­ed to Stopping Violence, ‘‘has completed 17 or 18 of 20 sessions . . . says when the course is finished he will reengage and go through the process again''; the relationsh­ip to continue. Judge said what occurred was on any view a spectacula­r lack of control by the defendant on what the victim still described as ‘‘that horrible night’’. Defendant's name suppressed for benefit of victim and children.

Christophe­r Dean Lees (36), of Dunedin, breaching parole (in possession of alcohol on December 5, tested positive for cannabis on December 9), sentence deferred six months, one court cost $130. Counsel David McCaskill said the alcohol was taken into Lees' room by his partner for his partner's use. Court probation officer Jeremy Burdett said Lees had been recalled to prison, due for release next month, a deferred sentence appropriat­e. Judge agreed, told Lees ‘‘you knew the conditions . . . you've had previous breaches of this nature''.

Carl Junior Bartlett (24), of Dunedin, breaching parole (failed to report to probation), December 4, sentence deferred six months, court costs $130. Court probation officer Mr Burdett said Bartlett ‘‘now reengaged''.
