Morweka’s trainer hoping for better luck

- JONNY TURNER

RICCARTON trainer Terri Rae hopes Morweka’s return to Wingatui today has a happier ending than her last visit to the track.

The Terri Raetrained sprinter was the second favourite for the listed Hazlett Stakes before she was latescratched from the Boxing Day race after suffering a minor injury in the starting stalls.

If Morweka can have better fortunes at the start of today’s 1200m open sprint, she can end a frustrating run and go head to head with Hazlett Stakes winner The Precious One.

The 6yrold ran into a divot in the Riccarton track when running seventh in her most recent start.

The incident resulted in Morweka losing her momentum and ending the brilliant run of form she took into the race.

“She went in a bit of a hole down the straight and, in the stipe’s report, there is a comment that her action was indifferent after that,” Rae said.

“She was vet checked and she was fine after that.”

Rae gave Morweka a short spell after her trip to Wingatui on Boxing

Day.

The sprinter has pleased the trainer since, winning two trials.

“We gave her 10 days out and she has come back up really well,” Rae said.

“She is working really good.” Rider Kylie Williams reunites with Morweka today after riding the mare in the most recent of her trial wins at Ashburton.

The pair combined to win Morkweka’s first two starts of the season.

Morweka was rated the $2.10 fixedodds favourite for race 7 yesterday, ahead of The Precious One, who was at $4.50.

The Precious One returns to run on her home track after running last behind Avantage in the group 1 Telegraph at Trentham.

The 5yrold was unable to show her best after running into plenty of traffic problems during the race.

Rae also starts Tears Of An Angel in today’s listed Dunedin

Guineas. The 3yrold pleased her trainer with her solid effort for fourth in just her third career start in the Gore Guineas for rider Chris Johnson.

“She was the most inexperienced horse in the field,” the trainer said.

“The two horses in front cut each other’s throat and she ended up going wide and getting a little bit lost.”

“She seemed like she was coming on again at the line and Chris was really happy with her and wanted to stick with her.”

Rae does not anticipate the step up from the 1355m of the Gore Guineas to the 1500m of today’s feature will be a problem for Tears Of An Angel.

“She has been working really well and she is a pretty honest little filly—– she is pretty genuine.

“She is a halfsister to Sacred Master who was a cups horse, so hopefully she swings to that side of things she will be OK.”

Rae and Johnson also combine with Magnify in race 2.

The 5yrold steps back in distance to 1200m after running third over 1400m at Wingatui on Boxing Day.

“He had a bit of a letup after his last start, so as long as he doesn’t get too keen in the running he should go an honest race,” Rae said.
