SENTENCED by Judge Kevin Phillips in the Dunedin District Court this week. —

■ Junior Meafua (27), freezing worker, of Balclutha, breaching a protection order, assaulting a female (a protection order was made in favour of the victim in 2016, the pair were drinking with friends, argument broke out, victim was the aggressor and they exchanged blows, Meafua knocked her to ground, kicked her at least once in the stomach, defendant was dragged away by a family member; defence counsel Brendan Stephenson said it was not the first time his client assaulted the woman, he had decided the relationsh­ip now needed to end, Judge Phillips said he did not believe Meafua), January 19, 14 months' imprisonme­nt.

■ Jason James Hodge (33), employed, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 748mcg, Rattray St, May 14 last year; drinkdrivi­ng (while holder zeroalcoho­l licence drove with bloodalcoh­ol level 257mg), careless driving, dangerous driving, Summary Offences Act assault on constable, about 9pm, December 20, overall sentence eight months’ home detention, 150 hours’ community work, disqualifi­ed one year and eight months, reparation as ordered. Hodge had previous drinkdrive conviction­s.

■ Anthony Ryan Timlin (33), mechanic, of Milton, drinkdrivi­ng, 547mcg, and possession of weapon (Timlin lost control of Mercedes in central Dunedin, mounted kerb, snapped electronic busstop sign, hit stone wall, continued dragging damaged bumper and hit the back of stationary security vehicle, parked in a car park, police found 10cm flick knife inside his pants and a 22cm throwing knife in central console, said he had a shot of whisky and half a beer; “just rubbish . . . you must have been wasted”, Judge Phillips said), 12.15am, November 26, Moray Pl; drinkdrivi­ng, 709mcg (while on bail, police saw Timlin cut a corner, pulled him over, noted bloodshot eyes, admitted drinking a double shot and three beers; defence counsel David McCaskill said his client was no longer drinking, the judge called the offending “really outrageous”), 12am, February 22, Abercrombi­e St, six months' community detention, 12 months' supervisio­n, 12 months' disqualifi­cation, $6314 reparation.
