Finding out about job options over coffee
A NEW employment initiative aims to link the newly unemployed with jobs — over a friendly cuppa.
Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said he had identified a need to help residents whose jobs had been affected by the Covid19 crisis find new or extra work, and was launching the ‘‘Work Local’’ initiative with Clutha Development.
Although the number of jobs locally had fallen from recent peaks, there were still plenty of options, he said.
‘‘This is about the hidden numbers. Although we’re coming out OK as a district, there are still those out there who will have lost work and need that bit of help finding something.
‘‘The longer you’re unemployed the deeper it cuts, so we wanted to take action now and avoid problems down the track.’’
Work Local coordinator Sarah Homer said the aim of the dropin sessions at cafes from June 38 was to informally link ‘‘people with jobs’’ over a coffee.
‘‘We want to give people options and simply let them know what’s out there right now. There were about 35 jobs advertised as of Friday, so whatever you’re looking for, we can help.’’
Although Clutha Development was not a formal recruitment agency, it could also help with CVs and covering letters, and enjoyed ‘‘strong links’’ with local employers, Mrs Homer said.
The economic development agency had received about 35 registrations on its online jobseekers portal during lockdown.
The sessions will take place on June 3 at Cafe 55, Balclutha (9.3011am) and Catlins Cafe, Owaka (1.302.30pm); June 4 at The Prospector, Lawrence (9.3010.30am) and Forum, Milton (1.303pm); and June 8 at Top Nosh, Tapanui (9.3010.30am).
