Sportsmanship a life lesson gleaned from school rugby match

-

THANK you, Jim Sullivan, (ODT, 7.7.20) for your coverage of Friday’s Waitaki v St Kevin’s rugby game. You captured, perfectly, the character and atmosphere of the game and its Oamaru venue — ‘‘Rugby Heaven’’ — indeed.

The sportsmanship you observed on the day is a recurring feature of this longstanding fixture. I recall also attending the 1961 game as a third former. The score was close and a scrum had formed on Waitaki’s fiveyard line.

The St Kevin’s halfback crossed the line in a flurry of bodies, but the referee and linesmen were anguished and it looked like we had dodged a bullet. A few seconds later, though, the referee signalled St Kevin’s had scored the try — on the advice of Waitaki’s captain.

I do not recall the final score, but I will never forget the occasion and the life lesson learned.

Kaikorai bridge

I LIVE in Burnside and enjoy walking around this area but find the bridge that goes over the railway line on Kaikorai Valley Rd, where it meets the offramp from the motorway, extremely dangerous to cross.

I see a lot of people, including many schoolchildren, crossing this bridge with extreme caution as the traffic can be heavy and moving very quickly. I would suggest that a footpath attached to the bridge would be a solution allowing safer access for everyone and I wonder if the Dunedin City Council would consider this as an option for ensuring the safety of their citizens?

Statue ‘vandalism’

I, TOO, would like to add my voice in protestation of the vandalising of our statues.

Most of the people doing such things should reread the history books to get their facts straight before their mindless actions.

As far as I can deduce it’s just an excuse to vandalise. Full stop. Heather Whiting

Bus tickets

A NOTE for PR writers and policy people at the Otago Regional Council bus department: If you have a flatrate busfare why the need to tag off with the new Bee Card?

The Go Card was a dodo from the start.

I've had transport cards for Boston, Singapore and London for many years. None need registration and all can be refilled by creditcard at transport terminals.
