SENTENCES imposed by community magistrate Simon Heale in the Dunedin District Court yesterday were. —

Karl Joseph Aschebrook (22), student and parttime worker, drinkdrivi­ng, 662mcg (stopped by police after seen driving from Murphy's Law Irish Bar; in explanatio­n said had consumed six bottles of beer and some pints), Drury, Auckland, about 12.05am, June 27, fined $500, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (backdated to begin June 27). Aschebrook not previously before the court.

Caroline Newson Brunner (24), of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 600mcg (spoken to by police at Fresh Choice Green Island, confirmed she had driven there, admitted drinking two or three glasses of wine beforehand), Main South Rd, about 12.20pm, June 26, fined $400, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months. Counsel Ann Leonard said Brunner had a personal upset in her life the previous night, had a few glasses of wine to calm down the next day, not something she usually did, had also not eaten. Brunner not previously before the court.

Finn Mckenzie Stark (19), apprentice diesel mechanic, of Balclutha, drinkdrivi­ng aged under 20, 34mg (routine stop; in explanatio­n said had a couple of beers earlier in the night with tea), about 10pm, June 23, court costs $130, medical and analyst expenses $361.99, disqualifi­ed three months.

Cody Lee Andersen (24), student, driving while driver licence suspended (March 16 given threemonth suspension for excess demerit points; May 12, about 4.30pm, driving in Stevenson Rd, sped off when passing police patrol turned in attempt to stop him, stopped in Panmure Ave and ran into address, police spoke to his passenger, Andersen returned minutes later, provided his details, found to be suspended), no disqualifi­cation, 40 hours' community work instead.

James Alan Curwood (39), mechanic, of Dunedin, intentiona­l damage (threw brick at windscreen of car parked in his driveway, causing windscreen to smash; car owner known to him), about noon, July 6, sentence deferred six months.

Sentenced by Judge Michael Crosbie on Tuesday was. —

Joshua Knowles (22), of Heriot, assaulting a 20yearold woman with whom he was in a family relationsh­ip, June 27; assaulting her having been in a family relationsh­ip with her, assaulting her using a serrated bread knife as a weapon, and threatenin­g behaviour towards a male work colleague of hers, August 24; another assault on her having been in a family relationsh­ip with her, and intentiona­lly damaging her iPhone, August 31; and, at Mosgiel on December 6, threatenin­g behaviour towards his grandmothe­r, possessing a 15cm paring knife in circumstan­ces showing intent to use it to commit an offence involving bodily injury, and possessing one gram of cannabis, overall sentence 10 months' home detention, including judicial monitoring (at six months can apply to have converted to community detention and supervisio­n and/or community work), six months’ post detention conditions, $549 reparation. Assault victim former partner of Knowles, at time of June incident they had been in a relationsh­ip and living together about four months; judge said the offending ‘‘incredibly serious over multiple occasions''; noted Knowles had an extremely complex mental health history, also drug, alcohol and anger issues.
