Coroner to look at death

THE police serious crash unit has investigated a fatal car crash in Oamaru on Saturday night, and the death will be referred to the coroner.

A police spokeswoman said the crash unit had attended the site in Reed St to examine the scene.

Inquiries were continuing to establish the circumstances of the crash, she said.

Police have confirmed one person died after the singlevehicle crash, in which the car hit a tree.

The crash was reported to police about 9.15pm and the person concerned was the sole occupant of the car.

Further details, including the gender and age of the deceased, were not available from the police yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said that no use of cutting gear had been required at the scene, and that Oamaru firefighters had helped initially with traffic control duties.
