Bumpy road

-

AS a frequent visitor to both Tomahawk lagoons, I would like to draw attention to deterioration of the short section of roadway along the frontage of the upper lagoon (entry from Oregon St).

Over the last several months, deep potholes have been allowed to develop unchecked, to an extent that they are now craters in every sense of the word.

This area is a favourite leisure destination for many people, those arriving in vehicles who wish to take the walking track to Highcliff Rd, anglers of all ages, minibus trips for the benefit of the elderly confined in retirement homes, and those with an interest in the prolific birdlife to be seen on both lagoons.

Recent experience has shown that this deterioration is rapidly getting beyond the solution of an easy fix (simply dumping gravel into the holes); the depth of many of these takes them down into the clay sublayers.

As an indication of their depth, a departing Holden on a recent day, in ‘‘bottoming’’ in one of the worst holes, actually scraped the underside of the vehicle, while frequent visitors have learned to take a slalom through them to avoid similar damage.

Please do not allow this to develop into a passthebuck proposition while whichever local body has responsibility procrastinates because the situation, as I see it, is rapidly heading towards permanent closure in the interests of safety and there is very little parking space in nearby streets.
