New home found for ice creams

ONCE a truck, now also a scoop shop.

Patti’s and Cream is expanding to open its first store in Eglinton Rd in Mornington tomorrow.

‘‘It’s exciting to not have something you have to drive to open,’’ Patti’s and Cream owner Olive Tabor said.

St Clair residents and visitors will be familiar with the Patti’s and Cream ice cream truck parked on the Esplanade.

‘‘We’ve been really busy in the truck for the last couple of years and it’s got to the point where [I] really wanted to expand to a physical site and still have the truck.

‘‘It’s amazing how resilient people are to the weather in Dunedin. We have people lining up when it’s three or four degrees for ice cream . . . it’s going to be awesome to have people be able to come in to a space inside where they can sit down as well and enjoy their ice cream.’’

The truck was not going anywhere, though.

It would keep turning up at St Clair at weekends as well as two days a week at the university.

‘‘St Clair is a massive part of the business. It’s literally got me to where I am now’’.

The Mornington scoop shop would not sell the burgers that were available in the food truck, but customers would be able to get tubs of ice cream — something that was previously only available via a Thursday delivery.

Miss Tabor said the ice cream was a Philadelphiastyle, hardpacked variety.

She used milk from Windy Ridge Farm in Balclutha and ‘‘as much Otago, Dunedin, Mosgiel fresh fruit and produce as possible’’.

She also collaborated with local companies such as Ocho and Bay Rd Peanut Butter.

Miss Tabor now had about 30 flavours, but she had a clear favourite.

‘‘I’m always harping on about it . . . mint chocolate. I just love mint chocolate.’’

Other flavours included plum and dark chocolate, birthday cake, banana and roasted white chocolate and pumpkin dulce de leche.

For the fitout of the new store Miss Tabor had gone to a range of local suppliers for the design, joinery, lights and other aspects.

‘‘Everything’s pretty much Dunedin sourced. It’s a great reflection of talent in the city.’’
