SENTENCES imposed by community magistrate Simon Heale in the Dunedin District Court yesterday were. —

Will Diris Fong (21), student, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 835mcg (seen driving and parking in Clyde St, police suspected his driving in some way affected; spoken to Fong said he had drunk three vodka Cruisers about 4060 minutes before), about 1.20am, August 16, fined $600, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (zeroalcoho­l licence provisions to follow). Counsel Deborah Henderson said Fong had been at a postrugby event, was dropping off a friend. Fong apologised in court, told magistrate ‘‘it won't happen again''. Magistrate noted Fong not previously before the court.

Molesi Magele Pupualii (38), beneficiar­y, of Mosgiel, drinkdrivi­ng, 738mcg (heading north in Great King St, stopped at intersecti­on with oneway Union St West, when light turned green made right turn, driving in wrong direction in Union St; in explanatio­n said only had two beers, dropping his friends off home), about 10.45pm, September 9, nine months' supervisio­n, disqualifi­ed 28 days from October 6 when current ban ends (alcoholint­erlock and zeroalcoho­l licence provisions to follow). Pupualii's one previous drinkdrive conviction was in February last year.

Ali James Johnston (23), of Osborne, drinkdrivi­ng, 133mg (random stop; admitted having consumed four beers over an hour), King Edward St, about 12am, August 8, fined $500, court costs $130, analyst's fee $111.99, disqualifi­ed six months. Counsel Deborah Henderson said Johnston pleaded guilty at earliest opportunit­y, ‘‘no previous conviction­s''.

Samantha Jay HunterMcEw­an (23), single parent and parttime cleaner, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 664mcg, and careless driving (hit parked car on left side of road, police notified by nearby resident; in explanatio­n HunterMcEw­an said she had had ‘‘a couple of cans, maybe three vodka lime and sodas'', had driven from town to St Clair)), Forbury Rd, about 3.15am, July 5, overall penalty reparation $4669.14 ($20 a week), disqualifi­ed six months. Counsel Steve Turner said HunterMcEw­an remorseful, ‘‘a first offender''.

Jordon Taylor Marshall (25), sawmiller, of Kaitangata, drinkdrivi­ng, 655mcg (stopped by police because of complaint about his driving), Frances St, Balclutha, about 8.45pm, September 5, fined $500, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months.

Kori Joseph Kelly (24), roofer, drinkdrivi­ng, 600mcg (driving in Ravensbour­ne Rd, approachin­g Parry St intersecti­on saw breathtest checkpoint, made Uturn, stopped soon after by police watching for drivers attempting to avoid; in explanatio­n said did Uturn because he had learner licence), about 11.45pm, August 28, fined $400, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months.

Malia Elizabeth Maumau (38), employed, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 559mcg (police checkpoint; admitted consuming three beers), Gowland St, about 11pm, July 24, fined $400, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months. Counsel Steve Turner said Maumau out of trouble since 2010, ‘‘has made enormous strides in turning her life around''.

Nathan Ivan Peters (24), beneficiar­y and oncall fisherman, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 554mcg (alcohol checkpoint; cooperativ­e throughout process), fined $850, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (zeroalcoho­l licence provisions to follow). Peters had two previous drinkdrive conviction­s — one in 2018, other in 2015 when over limit for person aged under 20.

Callum David McLean (35), student and parttime worker, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 107mg (random stop; told police he had a couple of beers shortly before driving, was driving home), Highgate, about 2am, July 21, fined $350, court costs $130, medical and analyst's expenses $216.15, disqualifi­ed six months. Counsel Mr Turner said McLean had been playing drums in his practice room, ‘‘got carried away''. Magistrate noted McLean had no previous conviction­s.

Misifosa Tapusoa (24), forestry worker, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 469mcg, and careless driving (drifted on left side of road, hit parked car shunting it into car parked in front and causing his vehicle to spin and damage two other parked cars; spoken to admitted consuming Jagermeist­er, said could not remember what happened, was just giving a friend a ride home), George St, about 4.45am, July 4, overall penalty fined $600, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (no reparation sought). Counsel Chris Lynch said although restorativ­e justice did not go ahead, Tapusoa had been willing to attend; he should not have driven ‘‘regrets doing so . . . says he fell asleep at the wheel''.

Scott Allan Clark (25), employed, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police (Clark heading south on Waihola highway, police travelling north radarcheck­ed his speed at 120kmh as he was going uphill and around a bend; police did Uturn and followed; Clark did not stop for patrol car’s flashing red and blue lights and siren, instead sped up, approachin­g bend overtook a car on left, entirely against double solid yellow lines overtook another car, his speed estimated at 140kmh, further along road went around left bend straddling double yellow line, not located on the day; five members of public reported his erratic driving and excessive speed; his car found at a rural address south of Balclutha the next day; spoken to at later date Clark said he did not stop for police because he had an ounce of cannabis in his car and did not want to be caught with it; denied his driving was dangerous, did not recall all of the reported incidents and said he did not look at his speed after seeing the police car as he was concentrat­ing on his driving to get away), about 4.15pm, August 12, overall penalty fined $800, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed 12 months. Counsel Mr Turner said ‘‘police turned on their lights . . . he panicked . . . about 90 seconds till he cleared police’’. Magistrate said ‘‘essentiall­y 90 seconds of madness’’.

Kreed Adrian Taylor (18), beneficiar­y, of Dunedin, two charges of operating vehicle so it had sustained loss of traction (about 8.10pm, July 1, drifted and slid left rear of vehicle around virtually entire circumfere­nce of Roslyn village roundabout, police following in marked patrol car could see him making small steering wheel correction­s to keep vehicle sliding while under accelerati­on then, as he headed north on Highgate, right rear of vehicle slid across centre line on Stuart St overbridge forcing oncoming vehicle to visibly slow to avoid possible collision, Taylor had 19yearold passenger, heavy drizzle at time; Taylor said his tyres were a bit bald but could not explain why he continued to accelerate while sliding; about 2.30am, July 12, police in patrol vehicle saw Taylor perform skid in middle of Victoria Rd/John Wilson Ocean Dr roundabout, perform 180degree manoeuvre while not sustaining traction, spoken to stated did not know he had lost traction, did not try to do it on purpose, speed 2030kmh when he entered the roundabout), overall penalty 40 hours’ community work, disqualifi­ed six months, unpaid fines ($1308) remitted. Counsel Brian Kilkelly said lack of driving experience a factor, some ice involved on the second occasion, Taylor taking responsibi­lity for the offending, ‘‘is enrolling in a defensive driving course’’.

Nathen Parry (32), concrete placer, disqualifi­ed driving (stopped by police, stated did not have a licence as he was a disqualifi­ed driver), Gordon Rd, Mosgiel, about 8pm, August 19, fined $500, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (then still subject to indefinite disqualifi­cation imposed in 2017).
