SENTENCES imposed by Judge Emma Smith in the Dunedin District Court yesterday were. —
Steven Alexander Jenkins (44), of Dunedin, threatening to kill and two charges intentional damage (Jenkins an alcoholic, after he recently became homeless his sister offered him a place to stay; about 1pm, July 13, he was at her house not wearing a Tshirt, she politely asked him to put on some more clothes as it was making others feel uncomfortable, he became instantly enraged, shouted abuse at her before lashing out and punching a large window in the dining room, smashing the glass; about 7.45am, July 22, Jenkins again at the victim's home, sitting on sofa wearing shorts and no Tshirt, victim reluctantly but politely asked him to put on Tshirt due to him making people feel uncomfortable, he jumped to his feet, shouting threats and punching another large glass window, smashing it; when police tried to speak to him he made numerous threatening statements, one being he was going to burn his sister’s house down and kill her), cancellation of intensive supervision and resentence on the charges on which it was imposed, overall penalty seven months’ jail (with six months release conditions). Judge noted restorative justice very positive, Jenkins’ apologies accepted; told him the release conditions were ‘‘to help you not offend again’’.
Reuben Ashley Saies (26), of Dunedin, breaching protection order, and intentional damage (victim 59yearold female family member; Saies at her address about 4pm, July 15, woke up and requested victim to take him to hospital, victim questioned the reason, Saies quickly became verbally abusive, wrote note threatening to kill himself, continued to be verbally aggressive towards the victim; leaving the address, damaged two outside chairs, walked to picket gate, kicked it open causing a picket to fall off; in explanation said ‘‘in a bit of low, got angry and lashed out’’), overall penalty nine months’ supervision, 50 hours’ community work, $50 reparation, court costs $130. Public defender Karlena Lawrence said Saies extremely remorseful, acknowledged he had underlying issues. Judge noted Saies had previously offended against the same victim ‘‘in the same abusive way’’, told him the victim ‘‘holds no grudges . . . just wants you to get better’’.
Philip Telford Chalker (57), of Dunedin, breaching community detention (failed to abide by curfew), August 17, court costs $130, breaching supervision (failed to report to probation), August 19, sentence deferred six months.
