Museum to open in December

-

AFTER delays caused by Covid19 and the death of its designer, the new Rakiura Museum (pictured below) is set to open on December 1.

Rakiura Heritage Centre Trust building committee chairwoman Margaret Hopkins said the

$3.6 million centre was due to open months ago.

However, lockdown and the impact of Covid19 delayed it, as well as the death of designer Chris Currie in late 2018.

The new designer/builder Sally Papps, of Exhibition Design & Build, was then contracted to undertake the exhibition fit out and began work in mid2019.

‘‘It’s a huge relief — or it will be once it’s opened,’’ Ms Hopkins said.

Exhibitions include the history of Stewart Island.

The building has a gallery twice the size of the old museum, a large, temperaturecontrolled storeroom, a workroom, meeting room, office and large foyer which features the locally carved millennium pou.

Entry will be $10 for an adult and free for children.
