Person seriously injured in crash

- JOHN GIBB

A PERSON is in serious but stable condition in Dunedin Hospital after being badly hurt in a collision between a ute and a concrete mixer truck near Otautau.

That person and another with moderate injuries were first sent to Southland Hospital in two ambulances after the 8.35am Saturday crash, on the DrummondHeddon Bush Rd, about 12km northeast of Otautau.

It is understood the seriously injured man was flown to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter early on Saturday afternoon.

The police Serious Crash Unit had studied the crash scene, the spokeswoman said.

The concrete mixer truck was left on its side, and there was oil at the intersection.

The crash was at the intersection with Mayfield Rd, a police spokeswoman said.

Problems moving the heavy truck may have been a factor in a lengthy road closure at the intersection due to the crash.

It is understood the road reopened about 4pm on Saturday.
