Four in row for Canterbury

-

Rugby: Canterbury won a fourth straight women's national provincial title in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

The red and blacks scored a try after the final hooter to beat Waikato 87 in the Farah Palmer Cup final on a hot spring day in Christchurch. Seeking its maiden title, Waikato had defended bravely throughout the match, preventing Canterbury from crossing its line for 80 minutes.

New Zealand will appeal an independent arbitration panel decision that will limit fans’ ability to watch next year’s races from Auckland’s waterfront.

The panel earlier this month effectively cancelled the use of two of the five proposed race courses, which were closest to Auckland’s waterfront and allowed landbased spectators to watch the AC75 foiling monohulls compete.

TNZ said on Saturday it had tabled a proposal to all three challenging syndicates — Italy’s Luna Rossa, Britain’s Team INEOS UK and American Magic from the United States — that would allow the courses to be reinstated but that Luna Rossa, ‘‘without specified reasoning, have, sadly, rejected this proposal, saying only that the defender’s proposal is far from fair and is not acceptable’’. — Reuters

The former Manchester United player was an uncompromising competitor who won 28 caps for England, lifting the World Cup in 1966. He provided one of that final's most iconic images as he danced around the Wembley pitch after the home team beat West Germany with the trophy in one hand and his false teeth in the other.

The Victorian opening pair combined for 486 runs to overtake the 464run stand made by the Australian test twins for New South Wales back in 1990.

The feat was achieved against South Australia in Adelaide yesterday when Harris crashed a boundary off the bowling of Wes Agar. It stands as the highest Australian firstclass partnership since the competition started in 1892. — AAP
