Xbox launch turns town green

- MATTHEW MCKEW

QUEENSTOWN turned green to mark the launch of the new Xbox gaming console.

Trees along the waterfront and in front of Eichardt’s Private Hotel and Fergburger were lit up late on Monday night to complement game play projected on to a temporary structure built on Lake Wakatipu.

Microsoftowned Xbox ran an 80minute livestream show on Youtube, Facebook Gaming and Twitch to usher in its Series X and Series S consoles, which went on sale in New Zealand and Australia yesterday.

They replaced the Xbox One released in 2013 and will compete with the new Playstation 5.

Xbox had remained tightlipped about the event and only a handful of people witnessed the light show on the Queenstown waterfront, while nearly 40,000 watched online.

Fergburger, Fergbaker and Mrs Ferg in Shotover St each launched a unique product to celebrate the consoles and the release of two major games, Assassin’s Creed and Destiny 2.

The Series X Burger, Viking Pie and specially created gelato will be available for the next 10 days.
