Otago pair set world records at national championships

- STAFF REPORTER

TWO Otago powerlifters have set world records.

Bruce Park and Marie Soffe recorded the lifts at the weekend’s National Powerlifting Championships in Auckland.

Due to the global situation caused by Covid19, World Powerlifting set a precedent that enabled international and world records to be recognised at this event.

Park, in the Masters 80plus years, 69kg class, set his world record in the squat.

He recorded a lift of 120kg, while also achieving Oceania records with a 163kg deadlift and combined total of 343 kg.

Soffe, a Masters 60plus years, 72kg class lifter, set her world record in the deadlift.

She lifted 150kg, breaking the previous mark, while also achieving an Oceania record in the bench press, as well as national records in the squat and combined total.

Both powerlifters also claimed national titles.
