McKenzie, Thompson key in Waikoikoi win

ALL three games of Southland’s ILT Club Cricket Premier League were played in Invercargi­ll on Saturday.

Waikoikoi is the early leader of the 50over competitio­n after beating Old Boys on the main oval at Queens Park. Metropolit­an upset Marist on ground two, while Southland Boys High School had a win on its own field against Appleby.

Old Boys had first turn at bat and made 203 after being in trouble at 68 for five. Cody McKenzie (82) and Jason Domigan (66) rescued the innings with a 108run partnershi­p. The nexthighes­t score of 24 came from wides.

Kurt Thompson was again best of the Koi bowlers, taking four wickets for 31 runs from his 10 overs.

The Koi batsmen reached the target in the 31st over with seven wickets in hand. Captain Jared McKenzie scored an unbeaten 77 off 83 deliveries and Hamish Cooke scored 60 off 50.

On field two, Queens Park groundsman Jason Osborne helped Metropolit­an beat Marist by 190 runs. Osborne scored 129 runs to help Metro to 280 for seven from its 50 overs. He then took three wickets as Metro rolled the defending champion for

90.

Boys High batted first against Appleby and scored 235 for six from its 50 overs. Opener Braydon Thomas made a patient 45, while Aaron Hart (61) and Captain Benji Culhane (62) put together a partnershi­p of 99.

Appleby bowler Conner Hart took four for 28 from his 10 overs.

The target of 236 was too much for Appleby. Halfway through the chase it was on target at 104 for four but struggled through to 186 with one wicket remaining when its 50 overs were up.

In the division one competitio­n, defending champion Central Western knocked Blue Mountain over for 118 in the 40th over at Tapanui.

Central captain Gareth Paul took five for 25 from eight overs.

Central reached the total in the 29th over. Grant Kean topscored with 33.

Jeremy McLeod helped Wyndale to an upset win in Te Anau. He took four wickets and made an unbeaten 95 as Wyndale chased down Te Anau’s total of 209 with five wickets to spare.
