Dunedin’s main street not worth all the hassle
I, LIKE many others living in Central Otago, come to Dunedin for shopping, hospital appointments, visiting family and friends, and so on.
This is a full day with trying to get around as many shops/businesses as possible in the least amount of time and stress.
I have found that I don’t visit the shops in George St now very much.
Too much time is wasted driving at a snail’s pace, pedestrians walking out in front of you thinking they have the right of way, trying to find a handy park or a park at all, and the hassle of feeding a parking meter.
We can’t all come by bus, bicycle or foot. A car is the only way for us.
Businesses that are in South Dunedin, Andersons Bay Rd and Crawford/Cumberland Sts are now my choice. Free parking and usually right outside the shop, a bonus when you have large/multiple purchases and are, at times, unable to walk longer distances.
There would be even less reason for me to shop in George St if it was oneway. It’s a nightmare now without any more changes or fewer parking spaces.
I am not interested, nor have the time, to sit in a cold, windy street to eat or socialise.
I don’t think I would be the only one living out of Dunedin with this viewpoint.
I am now finding that a shopping trip to Remarkables Park/Five Mile at Frankton is a far better experience. Lots more shops, bigger shops, more variety and way better parking.
Something for the DCC to think about.
