Three other semifinal results look clear cut
Auckland, 2.05pm, tomorrow
There are three other semifinals taking place in the Mitre 10 Cup this weekend. Rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at what could happen.
Auckland v Waikato
Why Auckland will win: The blue and whites finished top and are a big, strong side, which squeeze teams out of the running. In winger Salesi Rayasi the side has the inform player of the competition. Auckland beat Waikato easily in this competition not that long ago and Waikato has lost its past three games.
Why Waikato will win: The Mooloos have not a bad record at Eden Park, compared to most teams. Some key players are back and will be well rested. The side has experience and that means a lot in knockout games. Halfback Xavier Roe has been playing well.
What will happen: Auckland should win this in a canter. Waikato on the slide. Auckland 3413
Hawke’s Bay v Taranaki
Napier, 4.35pm, tomorrow
Why Hawke’s Bay will win: The home side has been invincible at home this year and appears to have no weaknesses right across the park. A solid and hardworking forward pack backed up by skilful backs. Beat Taranaki last week with a weakened side so should be too good all round for the visitors.
Why Taranaki will win: All year Taranaki has been threatening without ever putting it all together. Perhaps this will be its day. In first fiveeighth Stephen Perofeta, the side has a player who can tear defences to shreds and he was on fire last weekend against the Bay. Lachlan Boshier and Jacob RatumaitavukiKneepkens are sure to make an impact.
What will happen: Hawke’s Bay’s overall strength will rise up and do the business. Hawke’s Bay 3116
Tasman v Bay of Plenty
Nelson, 7.05pm tomorrow
Why Tasman will win: As Tasman showed Otago last week, its defence is very hard to get past. A lot of depth in the team and some matchwinners out wide. Back at home and wanting to defend its title. The Tasman team is not as good as last year’s side but is still more than capable. Winger Mark Talea needs to be used more.
Why Bay of Plenty will win: Halfway through the competition, the Bay of Plenty side looked out of the running. But it has bounced back and sneaked into the playoffs after a late win over North Harbour last week. Flanker Mitch Karpik is a key, as is halfback Luke Campbell and winger Joe Webber is better than his haircut suggests.
What will happen: Heroics last week will be too much for Bay of Plenty and the home side should get it done. Tasman 2812
