No decision yet on future of Dunedin Central fire station

MORE than a year after a review into Dunedin’s historic fire station was announced, a decision is yet to be made about its future.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand announced in September last year that it was reviewing the inner city Castle St site, and its longterm suitability, due to changes in the surrounding area to make way for the new Dunedin Hospital build.

At the time, the organisation said the review was an ongoing process, without a specific timeline.

The building, built in 1930 and occupied in 1931, has a Heritage NZ listing as a category 2 historic place.

This week regional manager Mike Grant said Fenz remained committed to operating from the site in the short to medium term.

The organisation regularly reviewed its operational facilities around the country, and would continue to monitor the situation in Dunedin.

Any operational change needed to reflect the needs of the modern organisation, he said.

‘‘Making changes to a large metropolitan station like Dunedin Central Station takes significant consideration and we won’t rush into any decision.’’

Response times from the Dunedin Central station continued to be well within guidelines, he said.
