Golden wedding celebrated

-

THE 50th anniversary is being celebrated today of the union of Mr and Mrs S.N. Brown, a worthy couple who have been witnesses of the dominion’s progress and taken a goodly part therein since 1861, the year when both arrived with their kindred at this end of the world from the Home country. In November 1866 Mr Brown joined the staff of the Wakatip Mail. After four years, on November 24, 1870, he was married to Miss Margaret

Sloan, youngest daughter of Mr Robert Sloan, a wellknown and much respected businessman in Invercargill.

Soon after this the young people removed to Arrowtown where Mr Brown established and controlled the Arrow Observer, now known as the Lake County Press. In November 1875 he purchased the Cromwell Argus from Messrs Matthews and Fenwick, and conducted that paper with much acceptance for a period of 12 years. They came to Dunedin and 1887, where Mr Brown invested in and took over the management of the Evening Herald, but after a year or two’s struggle it ceased to exist, proving a severe financial blow to him. Nothing daunted, he turned from journalism and commenced business as a general printer in Dunedin,.
