Mt Cook Alpine Salmon

-

HOME of freshwater King Salmon from New Zealand.

Perched on the edge of Lake Pukaki sits the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon shop; a local treasure worthy of any good road trip itinerary.

Along with iconic views of Mt Cook, the shop offers a very special kind of salmon, one found only in this particular part of the world.

King Salmon is a premium salmon species kiwis are regularly spoilt with, but Freshwater King Salmon (as opposed to searun) has a unique taste profile all of its own.

Freshwater King Salmon thrive in the cold glacial waters that flow from the Southern Alps. Swimming against constantly flowing, icecold currents keeps these salmon naturally healthy and fit. This active lifestyle, translates to a subtle clean taste and delicate texture.

Mt Cook Alpine Salmon have been farming in this remote and often challenging environment for 20 years. As you might imagine coming from Mackenzie country, the company takes great pride in their environmentally sustainable farming practices. They were the first salmon farm in Australasia to receive the Best Aquaculture Practice certification, and are rated with a ‘best choice’ green rating by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch.

This southern delicacy is gaining attention on the international culinary stage, but the heart of the company lies in Twizel the home of Freshwater King Salmon. Their shop on Lake Pukaki is open seven days a week, so don’t miss out on trying their famous sashimi while soaking in the gorgeous view of the Southern Alps.
