Otago Art Society
DOUG Hart, president of the Otago Art Society, opens up About Dunedin’s oldest art society.
What do you find rewarding about the Otago Art Society?
I love the commitment of our three hundred plus members who produce such a variety of creative artworks, from paintings, sculpture, ceramics and textiles to photography, cards, and jewellery.
How long have you been operating?
The Society was formed in 1876 to promote fine art. William Matthew Hodgkins was the founding father and his daughter Frances Hodgkins went on to achieve international fame. Our home in the iconic Dunedin Railway Station is a fitting place to enjoy art and shop for unique, locally made products.
What would surprise visitors?
The high quality and variety of the work always brings a comment from visitors. We have four gallery spaces and a great shop run by friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. Purchase art for your collection, or as gifts for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions.
Do you hold exhibitions?
We hold around 18 different exhibitions throughout the year from members work, youth art, and community groups, to prestigious national competitions. We have wonderful sponsors who provide opportunities for local artists to win substantial prizes.
How do you become a member?
Just come in and visit the shop, or download a form from our website www.otagoartsociety.co.nz. Any member can enter artwork into our exhibitions no matter what level they are at. Once a month we hold members meetings where people can learn about the art world and have fun meeting other artists.
Who should come and visit?
Everyone! All are welcome and it’s a fantastic and enjoyable experience throughout the year, no matter what’s on. We are easily accessible and people of all abilities can enjoy our artwork. We are listed as a rainy day activity on the internet and we often have great games that children can play like
Detail Detective which asks the player to seek out clues within our paintings. The Otago Art Society is a wonderful experience. Come in and experience award winning art in the most beautiful and historic setting New Zealand has to offer. You may be inspired yourself!
