Many kittens nearly ready for adoption
MANY kittens will soon be available for adoption after an increase in numbers at the Dunedin SPCA.
More than 130 cats have been brought into the Dunedin centre since the start of December.
‘‘We’re pretty full up and there are probably more coming in as we speak,’’ area manager Sophie McSkimming said.
The SPCA urges people to desex their cats to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
Many of the kittens at the Dunedin SPCA are strays, but others are from domesticated cats.
‘‘It is so important to desex your cats as soon as they come of age,’’ Ms McSkimming said.
Desexing kittens can be done from about 4 months old.
Animal care area manager Emma Collins said kitten numbers at the SPCA were manageable, but the very young ones required a lot of looking after.
‘‘They need extra care, and they require syringe feeding. This is also a very important socialisation period for the kittens.’’
