Fire at Kaka Point threatens houses

-

A CONSIDERABLE amount of consternation was felt by a large number of residents and holidaymakers at Kaka Point, when it was discovered that part of the beautiful bush overlooking Wilsher Bay was ablaze. About 9 on Monday morning some campers reported that a small fire, previously used to boil water for camp tea, had been fanned by the

furious gale which raged for some hours during Sunday, and had spread to the adjoining bush. Scores of tents were hurriedly struck, and these, with their contents, were conveyed to places of safety along the foreshore. Meanwhile some hundreds of visitors formed themselves into a bucket brigade and worked so energetically that within two or three hours the worst danger of any serious conflagration was reduced to a minimum. The brigade’s efforts were materially assisted by a complete change of wind, which had been driving the fire very near several of the bungalow houses erected but a few weeks ago. Many of the fine heavy timber trees have disappeared from the terrace, it being necessary to level them to ensure complete safety to the rest of the bushcovered properties.
